Commuter Ambassador

Job Description

The Fit Intern Commuter Ambassador will work with other Commuter Ambassadors in the Office of Commuter Life (CommLife) alongside the Office of Student and Family Assistance to aid new and transfer commuters in their transition to life at 草榴社区. This position will allow the FIT Student to have experience in programming, networking, and working with a diverse population of their peers.  This position will help to create a sense of belonging and support for new and current commuters.  This in turn will aid in this population's success both in and outside of the classroom.

This FIT position will help the student with leadership, communication, networking and collaboration as part of the CommLife team to support our community. This FIT position will learn more about the specific needs of commuters and how to support them in their participation on campus (this would be a great experience for Psychology, Public Health, Education or Communication students but any major will be considered). The FIT position will receive training on Student Life resources (similar to other paid leadership positions) to ensure that the students have the support and background to assist others.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

  • Disseminate routine information, processes and deadlines to commuters on campus resources such as (but not limited to): the Counseling Center, Student Health Services, Center for Career and Professional Development, Public Safety and Transportation, the Intercultural Center, QTRAC and the Center for Student Academic Success.
  • Promote commuter engagement in campus-chartered clubs, organizations and events.
  • Engage commuters using social media outlets and assist with the communications of the CommLife Hawk Link and Roger Link.
  • Collaborate with Commuter Ambassadors (CAs) to create and maintain commuter programming and events.
  • At times, attend meetings with CIA and bridge student-led programming with the CommLife and Student Life Dept.
  • Attend departmental weekly meetings (mandatory) during the semester. Communicate with CAs and supervisor about ALL efforts involving CommLife and their role (future events, intentional commuter events, communications, programs and projects)
  • Work directly with the current FIT intern(s) to develop skills, network and plan.
  • Foster a welcoming environment in the Commuter Lounge.
  • Along with the upperclass person FIT intern(s), engage in the Commuter Connections Program by developing positive relationships with incoming commuter students such as, meeting 1-1 with first year and transfer students throughout the semester for supportive commuter conversations.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of Fall Commuter Appreciation Day and Spring Commuter Appreciation Week

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

  • Continue with Year 1 responsibilities.
  • Present at June, August and January Orientation to incoming commuter students.
  • Assist in the amending of the Commuter Student Assessment, working with Institutional Research.
  • Attend Admission Events to represent life of a commuter.
  • Initiate commuter events and programs to supervisor, other FIT Intern(s) and CAs.
  • Engage in other departments to engage with commuter life awareness and build support across campus.

Year 3
Responsibility/Function

  • Continue with Years 1 and 2 responsibilities.
  • Review the Commuter Life Assessment.
  • Facilitate meetings with other departments to engage with commuter life awareness and build support across campus.
  • Assist in the onboarding of new CAs starting with interviewing.
  • Mentor new Commuter Ambassadors in their role.
  • Work with supervisor(s), Division of Student Life and CAs to generate new projects and curriculums that would better suit the current and upcoming needs of commuters.
  • Represent and advocate for commuter needs in administrative meetings.
  • Create Commuter Assistant FIT Transition Materials.

*Students are prohibited from driving during work-study employment with the limited exception of authorized work-study driver positions.
